6 of the Most Popular Indonesian Street Foods

Indonesian street food is an inseparable part in the scene of Indonesian cuisines. Colloquially known as “kaki lima”, the sheer variety of Indonesian street food makes it something that could take up your whole trip, if you’re serious about it.

Indonesian street food are just too numerous to list one by one not to mention the variations of each region, varieties created due to Indonesia’s diverse ethnicity and culture—so let’s take a glance at some of the most popular ones you could find everyday on the streets, no matter where you are in Indonesia.

What’s “Street Food” in Indonesia?

Street foods are essentially sold by kaki lima’s vendor (pedagang kaki lima).

Pedagang Kaki Lima literally means “Vendors with Five Legs” which refers to both the seller and the pushing carts used by these mobile vendors (these carts have two wheels and one stabilizer wooden foot, plus two legs of the sellers themselves, thus, the name).

Sellers commonly wheel push carts, and while kaki lima sell things as they move around the area, it’s not uncommon to see carts stationed at certain spots, often on pedestrian sidewalks. Certain dagang kaki lima also rides bicycle to sell their items.

A notable example found in Bali is the vendor of kue putu (Indonesian steamed cake, commonly green-colored, with palm sugar fillings and coconut shreds topping).

The carts used by kaki lima often has LPG-powered stoves or steamer pots to prepare, re-heat, or cook the dishes as they are ordered. “Pikulan” is also something commonly used by street vendors, a method in which the sellers carry their food and equipments by using a rod and balancing them on their shoulders.

Bakso

Bakso vendors commonly sells mie ayam (chicken noodle), bakmi (also a type of noodle), and batagor (a short for bakso tahu goreng or meatball fried tofu).

Bakso is a popular Indonesian meatball or meat paste served in a bowl with a hot broth; often accompanied by hot chili paste and sweet soy sauce separately, that locals often put into their bowl and mix them before eating. There are numerous varieties of bakso both by ingredients and by regions variety.

To name a few, there are bakso urat, bakso tenis, and bakso Malang, bakso telur, bakso ikan, and many others.

Siomay

This delicious dish topped with rich and flavorful peanut paste is of Chinese origin (as much of Indonesian delicacies are). Siomay generally refers to fish dumpling with vegetables.

The dish is often served with vegetables such as boiled cabbage and boiled potatoes. Hard-boiled eggs and tofus are some of the most common inclusions to the dish. To those who want to eat Indonesian but is sick of eating rice all day long, Siomay is a perfect alternative.

Sate

One of Indonesia’s best known “national” dishes, quite renowned and popular overseas, Often served with sweet soy sauce known as kecap manis.

Most popular Indonesian street foods - Sate

Just like bakso and other Indonesian cuisines, Sate has numerous variations named after the region it’s originated, the sauce, or the ingredients. There is a unique satay originated from Bali, known as Sate Lilit.

Sate Lilit is often made of fish, but it’s also known to be made out of other meat as its ingredients. They are finely minced and grilled on a charcoal, letting the spices and seasonings absorb perfectly into the texture.

Soto

Soto is often named after the regions where they originated. One of the most popular soto with a regional namesake is Soto lamongan, in which some said it’s a variation of the Madura soto. Both soto Lamongan and Madura soto has yellow transparent broth, with shredded chicken meat, hard-boiled egg, often topped with fried shallots.

Pempek

Originated from the South of Sumatera, Pempek is reminiscent of Chinese fishcake. Although Pempek stood out due to the sauce it’s commonly served with; “cuka”, or as the South Sumatran people called it, “cuko”.

Cuko is a rich brown sauce that looks almost black, made of vinegar and palm sugar, seasoned with garlic, chili, and other ingredients. The taste is rich and sometimes spicy. Cucumber is often added to accompany the meal.

Es Kelapa Muda

Closing the list with a super refreshing natural re-hydration method; coconut water, or as the Indonesian called it, “kelapa muda”.

Generally you can find kelapa muda at nearly any corner of the street, often sold by individuals, usually run as a small family business. Kelapa Muda is often served in transparent plastic bags by the street food vendors.

It’s the perfect companion for any meals and a life-saver for the tropical Indonesian scorching hot climate!

If you want to use the small or skimpy tarp for your hammock, you have to realize that it will require the better, advanced or the great ability as well to keep you staying dry in a rainy day.

Regarding to the size of the hammock tarp itself, you can exceed between 10 – 40 cm over each ends of your hammock. The bigger your tarp is, when compared with your hammock size, is usually the better, but make sure that it won’t burden you too much in its weight and volume.

When to buy double parachute hammock?

Double parachute hammock size is the better choice for the larger space. And when I say that the size is large, mostly it means wider. The advantages of it surely will save more spaces in small room and you can also share it with another person. Mostly the manufacturer will recommend the customers that it can only be fit for two adults.

1. When you want to change your bed with the double parachute hammock

What can I say? We are capable to use the hammock as our own bed. We could sleep in it while hanging inside the room. Using the single hammock size is also recommended, but the wider hammock can be more useful for your sleeping.

One Stop Trip to the Supermarket: Tokyo Cheap Eats Under 500 Yen

Tokyo Cheap Eats Under 500 Yen

Everyone loves the sheer convenience Japanese convenience stores (conbini) provides. it’s located basically everywhere, at any corner of the road that you can find. It’s so easy to lose track of your spending as you buy a piece of dorayaki at FamilyMart, then spend 200 yen more at a warm bottled ocha at 7-Eleven. While that’s good and all for your in-between meals snacking, relying on conbinis for your meals might falsely led you to believe that you’ve cut down your meal expenses to a maximum just because you don’t eat at a cafe or a restaurant.

You can definitely cut more.

Obviously as opposed to the conbini, supermarkets are considerably cheaper. At conbini, you pay for the convenience. So make sure to make regular trips to supermarkets if there is one near your place. Traditional markets are obviously cheaper, so that’s an option too. However supermarkets are infinitely easier to find in the midst of Tokyo metropolis. If you can’t find one on the main road, usually very well within walking distance, then it’s probably just one or two stations away.

Cook!

If you have time and the facility of where you stay allows it, cooking by yourself as you travel can be extremely rewarding, as you navigate through the process of acquiring the ingredients yourself and finding the time to cook amidst your packed itinerary—and perhaps even preparing a lunchbox for yourself. The feeling of domesticity could be very fulfilling. No need to fret if you simply can’t sacrifice the time to do the mundane task of cooking—or simply too lazy to. You can find slices of chicken, beef, fishes, and the likes, ready to season and cooked. If you’ve been eyeing some Japanese cooking recipes, then starting in Japan is the best way to go about it, as ingredients and seasonings like shoyu, wasabi, mentsuyu, mirin, and many others could be easily found.

The Snacks

A pack of toast bread that have anywhere between 5 to 10 slices are priced anywhere between 100 JPY to 400 JPY, depending on the type of bread and the brands. A pack of 10 slices of peeled bread I usually bought is priced at 130-150 JPY, enough for at least three days of breakfast.

Fruits are often expensive in Tokyo supermarket, so make sure to watch out for the price tags. Except for bananas which are reasonably priced across many shops. A pack of 3 Cavendish banana is priced at approximately 200-300 JPY; you could find them cheaper or more expensive depending on the supermarkets/stores. The bananas last for a few days; more if stored in the fridge. Banana toasted sandwich first thing in the morning? Yum!

Instant Food

You can also find delightful instant food that won’t make you feel as if you’re eating something instant. If you have access to a microwave or a stove, instant okonomiyaki and takoyaki are among the packaged instant food you’d have to try. There’s also a pack of Hamburg steak complete with the sauce ready for you to heat up and dig in. Then of course, there’s the complete set; Bento. A fancier pack of bento would easily cost you over 500 JPY, though, so take notice of the Yen tags!

Of course when it comes to fresh produce in Japan, heed the age-old tip of closing time discount. Nearing closing time, usually one hour to 30 minutes, the tenchou (manager) would put up discount stickers—in which the discount rise gradually. From 10%, 30%, 50% and even up to 80%. You can easily get a pack of bento priced at approximately 150 JPY for a non-frilly bento, and 300 JPY for some makizushi or even a few of nigirizushi! Each store’s closing time is different, so make sure to check to notice the pattern.

Bringing the Kids to Komodo Island: Can You, Really?

“Can your kids go to Komodo Island?”

Bringing the Kids to Komodo Island

The Komodo Island boasts with its wildness. The raw nature, prehistoric giant lizard, and wonderful landscape promise a wonderful adventure. When you go around April to June, you will be greeted by highly contrast, technicolor landscape—which will be very exciting for the kids. In the season, they’ll get to see sparkling white beach bordering rolling green hills with pristine azure sea. They will have a precious chance to meet with the Komodo Dragon. one of 7 New Wonders of Nature. As if it’s not enough, your kids will be thrilled by pirate-like adventure in the liveaboard and get the chance to snorkel in shore water which is very alive with marine life.

All the experience they can get in Komodo Island will be very beneficial for their growth and development. However, given the rough condition, travelling with kids to this frontier require special attention. Here’s the tips to have successful holiday with Komodo and the kids—and keep everyone happy.

1. Keep ‘Em Away from the Dragon

Seeing the Komodo Dragon in the real life can be very thrilling, especially for the kids. These scaly beasts appear like straight from their Dinosaurs books (PS: albeit looking like  one, they are not a dinosaur). The danger lies in Komodo’s behavior. The giant lizard often seems kinda sleepy and languid, sometimes heavy with full belly. They provide false sense of security while in fact they can move in a flash to bite you.

Komodo might appear like a strange creature that sparks the curiosity of the kids. However, never let your kids touch them. Don’t even let them go any nearer than 2 meters from the lizard. Keep the kids close, especially in a National Park where the lizard are left out roaming free without any fence.

2. Stock Up in Labuan Bajo

Before you hop on the cruise, better to spend a good time in Labuan Bajo. This is the last ‘civilized’ city where you can find the best range of necessity. Fill up your bag with diapers, medical supplies, milk, snacks, toiletries, and any other thing you might need. Keep in mind that it’s best to stick with small-sized cartoned milk for the kids. The big one can only life for a day after opened, and you might not have private refrigerator in your boat.

3. Always Bring Snack and First Aid

Here are five things that should be in your bag wherever you go: first aid kit, sunscreen, mosquito repeller, and snacks. The sun in Komodo Island (and generally anywhere in Flores) is very hot. The kids will get very bad sunburn without regular reapplication of sunscreen. And it’s one of high malaria area in Indonesia—you don’t want to risk it. Meanwhile, the snack can help to soothe down the weary kids after so much adventure.

4. Bring Your Own Equipment

What is a trip to Komodo Island without one or two snorkelling? The Komodo National Park is one of the best preserved marine life as well as best diving site in the world. The trip is bound for some underwater exploration! Unfortunately, not many ship provide kids-size life jackets. You need to bring one. The same thing applies for snorkelling equipment—you will have difficulty to find kid-sized equipment. If your plan to have some water sports, make sure you bring all the kids’ equipment before going.

5. Bring Suitable Shoes and Mosquito Nets

Any day in the Komodo National Park is a trekking day. You will trek with the dragons in Komodo and Rinca Island. Going to a hilltop view in Padar? Trekking. Resting for sunset in Kelor Island? Another short trek. Exploring the savannah in Gili Lawa and Sebayut? You got the trek ready. Make sure each of the kids are well equipped with comfortable short shoes. It will help them to trek easily and avoid the swollen foot.

And the mosquito nets? You’ll be super thankful to yourself to bring one as not all places have it. It protects everyone from mosquito bites and the malaria dengue .

6. Take them to Exercise Before the Trip

With so many snorkel and trekking rip, it’s better to get the kids for some exercise before going. It can be a simple jog in the park or bicycling.

Planning Your First Komodo Cruise: Choosing the Cabins

What’s better than a Komodo cruise for a summer voyage to the idyllic Flores and Komodo National Park? Picture a tropical archipelago with high, brown mountainous lands, glittering soft beaches, and luminous ocean. Sometimes, lines of rosy-tinted beaches peek shyly from hidden shores. Now, throw in the prehistoric, venomous, and largest lizard in the world which creeps among the drylands. You got Flores, one of the most idyllic destinations in Indonesia. And this type of holiday is best spent in the comfort of a cruise.

Planning Your First Komodo Cruise: Choosing the Cabins

A cruise is built for those who really want to experience the “live aboard” (literally living in the ship) to the fullest. It’s not built for speed—you might want to opt for speedboat for that. A sailing trip with Komodo cruise is not only about a vessel to reach destinations. It is meant to take the journey itself as an enjoyable part of the adventure itself. If this is your first time sailing with a cruise, take note to these tips to make your cruising holiday pleasant.

Determine Your Type of Holiday

With so much gorgeous Komodo cruise options, you can choose one that really suits your type of vacancy. If you are traveling with a partner or having a honeymoon trip, you might want to take a cruise with plenty of privacy. A fancier cruise with a touch of romantic design will be a good plus for a couple holiday. After all, you want this trip to make you all lovey-dovey with your partner, don’t you?

Traveling with family (and little children) will require a bigger room to accommodate all the family members. Better to take a ship with family rooms; the one with one queen bed and bunk beds for the kiddos. For an adventure with the gang, a luxury might not sit in top priority. A cruise with bunk beds, plenty of lounge spaces and party area will make a great trip. The type of your holiday matters to ship choosing—from luxury cruise to the budget-friendly one.

Cabin Placement

Speaking of rooms, pay extra attention when you choose a cabin. Especially if you are prone to seasickness during a sailing trip. Know that the higher a cabin, the harder it rocks. They do, however, provide the best view of the surrounding ocean. For a more stable stay, choose cabins in the lower and central part of the Komodo cruise.

A Style of Live

Do you want to wake up to sunrise? Or would you prefer to get closer to the social hub? All this little preference matter when you choose a cabin in the cruise. If you are very social, for example, you might want to have easy access to the lounge, where the crowds are.

Wooden Ship vs Cruise

A lot of travel agencies back in Labuan Bajo confuse a wooden ship with the cruise—think that they are interchangeable. A lot of travelers fell into the misguidance and ended up with cramped wooden boats instead of a neat cruise. A wooden boat and low-budget liveaboard to Komodo are not the comfiest in the market. The cabins are usually just enough to spread a bed and pile bunkbeds right on top of it. The narrow decks have little space left from long tables and chairs. Sometimes, they just arrange the meal on the floor! Know the difference.

Type of Cabins

Just like hotels, cruises has its own terms when it comes to the type of their ‘rooms’. Almost every decent Komodo cruise will feature one of these types or combine several of them on board. There are four types of cabins that you need to know:

The Inside

It’s the smallest cabin in the ship, usually located at the lowest level or in the middle of the ship. Expect to find no windows. It’s also the cheapest of all room—perfect for budget travelers who still want to have quality service of a cruise.

  • The Outside

This room is located on the side of the ship. It has a small window or porthole, so you can peek at what’s happening on the outside. Sometimes also known as ocean view, it’s also a little bit bigger than “inside” type.

  • The Balcony

Just as the name suggests, this room features a balcony where you can take fresh air without coming to public space. It’s great for travelers who want a little luxury and privacy. You can enjoy the beauty of the ocean right on the doorstep.

  • The Suite

Sometimes it’s only found in the most luxurious Komodo Cruise. The suite allows separated living areas and sleeping station, making the journey much more comfortable.
